What Is Crypto Volatility?

Back to guides

Volatility describes how fast and how far the price moves. Higher volatility means bigger price swings and higher short-term risk.

Why volatility matters

  • High volatility can create opportunities, but it also increases the chance of bad entries.
  • Stops are easier to hit when candles are large.
  • Leverage amplifies volatility: a small move can liquidate a futures position.

A simple way to measure volatility (beginner)

A practical shortcut is the 24h range: (24h high − 24h low) / 24h open. If the range is large, volatility is high.

How to use it before a trade

  • If volatility is extreme, reduce position size or wait for calmer conditions.
  • Place stops based on structure (support/resistance), not random small percentages.
  • Consider DCA instead of an all-in entry.
